Great TV or movie content can be hard to find. Netflix’ Black Mirror is a gem, but when does the next season finally start? Great news: the season 4 trailer is here along with an airing date. And as a bonus for us lovers of stories and bookworms: there’s some great Black Mirror related book news, too.
Black Mirror, new season?!
Just the other day I was browsing the web, minding my own business, and complaining a little bit to myself about how there’s such a shortage of great, meaningful, thoughtfully created content. Blogs, they’re often OK or even good (have you checked out www.thriveglobal.com ?), but good to great movies and series? They’re hard to find sometimes. Especially if you’ve been jaded by the likes of Netflix’ Black Mirror series.
But then, in the middle of my internet-sorrow, all of a sudden I found something amazing. Hope. Out of nowhere, I stumbled upon the trailer for the new black mirror season! We knew it was coming, and now it’s finally here!
When Black Mirror season 4 starts?
This has been a question on the collective mind of all of the noir science-fiction anthology series fans. All of the news from the Netflix people has been purposely vague about when the new series would arrive. All we knew was that it would probably be live somewhere around the holidays this year. The “Black Mirror Official trailer” for season 4 you can view above, says all episodes air december 29. Awesome!
Why Black Mirror is amazing
Personally for me, Black Mirror is a series that stands out above probably anything we’ve seen in terms of online or TV content. It’s intelligent. It’s edgy. The quality it has gets people to talk about it; I myself was introduced to the series by a good friend who kept adamantly repeating that “I simply need to watch this.” There’s a reason it is going viral.
In terms of form, Black Mirror is incredibly well made. It’s visual aspect is sleek; the anthology cadre gives the makers the freedom to play with the visual style a little bit more but there’s still an air of recognition across the various episodes and even seasons; whether it’s the acclaimed “San Junipero”, the eerie “The entire history of you” or social critique “15 million merits”.
But where the true power of the series lies, in my humble opinion, is in its combination of intelligent mystery, extreme social relevancy of its themes, and the philosophical, ethical questions it keeps posing all of us. That, combined with its edginess results in an experience that is attention-grabbing, impactful, thought-provoking and gripping, every single time. I for one can’t wait until December 29th!
Which Black Mirror episode is the best?
I hear a lot of different arguments and opinions in this space. I myself have a really hard time deciding. For me it would probably be one of the three I mention above, with “San Junipero” as a recipient of not one but two Emmy awards this year. What’s your personal favorite? I’d love to hear from you in the comments.
Black Mirror and technology
A big part of what makes Black Mirror so extremely relevant that it has fast become one of the most popular and most critically acclaimed series of the last few years, is its take on our relationship with technology. Because technology has a profound impact on our lives as individuals, in organizations and in society as a whole.
And instead of painting the picture of a typical Star Trek-ey universe in the distant future, Black Mirror focuses on visions of a not-so-far-away future. And asks very, very serious questions about the way that we’re headed. I believe we could all benefit from asking these kinds of questions more often.
Speaking of technology: a Black Mirror book will be released in february 2018
Three separate writers have been asked to contribute to a (physical) Black Mirror book that is expected to launch in early 2018. Charlie Brooker, creator of the series is the editor for this undoubtedly much awaited piece of work.
What is the relationship between a book, and a sci-fi series that critically and sometimes even brutally highlights potential near-future social problems arising around our relationship with high-tech? More than you would expect at first sight.
In my view, we are all progressively allowing smart devices and other modern technology to slowly strip us of a few things; among which are focus and the magic of our imagination. Reading books – online or offline – is a great way to start turning the tide. That’s one of the reasons this site and “Face Value”, the book, even exist in their current forms.
Reading is high-tech and your imagination is magic
Don’t wanna just take it from me that books are high-tech and your imagination is magic? Charlie Brooker, creator of the Black Mirror series:
“All-new Black Mirror stories from exciting authors – that’s a joyous prospect. And they’re appearing in a high-tech new format known as a ‘book’. Apparently you just have to glance at some sort of ‘ink code’ printed on paper and images and sounds magically appear in your head, enacting the story. Sounds far-fetched to me, but we’ll see.”
Dear Charlie Brooker: I want to be a Black Mirror writer!
If you’re reading this, and I absolutely expect the odds of that to be super huge, Mr. Brooker, please accept my application for the position of writer for the next Black Mirror book. If anyone, I understand the magic of reading, of storytelling and of human imagination.
And I offer “Face Value” as my portfolio proof; a slightly racey mystery novel that asks questions about our modern day society and the impact of digital technology on all of our lives, maybe even as much as your best-known series does.
“What if the key to having it all, was suddenly thrown into your lap one day? All of the money, success, love and attention you could ever have imagined. Would you be able to believe in it? What would be the value of it all? Would it be real? And, who does she keep texting?”
Not 100% convinced yet? No problem. Watch the trailer for the book and I’m sure you’ll be intrigued, at the very least:
